BOOK LISTS
The long-awaited Robert Lee book entitled, “The Railways of Victoria:1854-2004” is now in stock and on the shelves at The Railfan Shop. This incredibly well-researched book covers the sesquicentenary of the Victorian Railways and thus commissioned by the Victorian government and published by Melbourne University Press—at 304 pages and inclusive of an extensive index—this is the manager’s recommendation for 2008; albeit 4 years late but I feel the In Memoriam tribute at the beginning explains the delay.

He has undertaken heritage missions to India to assess mountain railways; as well as, assessing communications history in Australia. VICTORIAN SIGNALLING by Accident or Design?" - Peter FisherPeter Fisher has researched the development of signalling systems overseas (particularly in the UK and the USA) to establish the correlation between overseas best practice and its adoption and adaptation to the Victorian environment. The book explores how and why Victoria chose to blend two vastly different philosophies to achieve a cohesive outcome. The motivation behind this book was the author’s concern that the mechanical signals on the Victorian Railways were fast disappearing without any published record which led him to his meticulous preparation of the material for this book. The book’s 120 pages are printed on high quality paper and include over 160 black & white; as well as colour photographs and illustrations. Price: $54.95 Postage: $9.50 About the author: Peter Fisher has been interested in trains, and particularly signals, since he was a small boy living atop the Northcote cutting. At ten years of age he started the Northcote Train Society, supported by The Spirit newspaper. He is now a professional environmental consultant and university lecturer. He also writes freelance for the Australian Financial Review. He is meticulous with researching for his profession and for his hobby.

About The Author:
Ronald George
Preston Ron Preston passed away on 22 November 2006, three days after finalising the contents of this book. During the four year period of Ron's illness, he completed six Eveleigh Press books as well as numerous articles for magazines and newspapers, sharing his extensive railway knowledge to his very last days. Ghost Railways of Australia By Robin Bromby 232 pp. Includes index. This is a very lavish production and a comprehensive look at the history of the railways as a spent force; comprising some rare photographs and potted histories of interesting facts and personalities of the railway workers that made the Australian rail network what it has become. As the title suggests – the author concentrates on the dissipated lines such as the Melbourne Inner Circle. The author calls such lines – vanished places. Expertly researched; but really a potted history and should be considered in the Xmas present category, for a new chum, rather than the hardcore train fan. *________ $55.00 post $9.50 *________ Postage per title $8.95
